Kiltoom dog groomer wins ‘Newcomer of the Year’ award

Kiltoom woman and dog grooming business operator Sionann O'Reilly-Collins was recently named ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the Local Pet Awards Ireland, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santry, Dublin.

After returning to Ireland from Scotland just before the Covid-19 lockdown, Sionann left her position at Strathclyde University in Glasgow to pursue a hands-on life with animals, working long hours on a large dairy farm in Kinnegad. Her dedication and love for animals then led her to follow a new dream, dog grooming.

She trained for four months under renowned groomer Michael Shiels in Derry, before launching her own business, The Hairy Godmother, from a converted garage beside her family home in Athlone.

Early this year, her journey took a challenging turn when a serious horse-riding accident left her with a broken leg, an airlift to Tallaght and months of recovery.

Yet, with determination and the support of her local community, family, and loyal clients, Sionann reopened her salon and started rebuilding her business from strength to strength.

Winning the Newcomer of the Year award is a recognition of Sionann’s perseverance, a true celebration of someone who refused to give up on what she loves most.

Sionann is very grateful for all those that voted for her in the public vote.

“This award means so much to me, especially after such a difficult start to the year with a badly broken leg.

“It’s proof that with perseverance, hard work, and the incredible support of my parents, neighbours, and clients who stood by me, anything is possible,” she said, as she outlined the significance this award holds for her.

"Their encouragement kept me going at a time when I couldn’t even stand at a grooming table. I’m proud of this award, but above all, I’m deeply thankful.

“Working with animals is my happy place," she added.
