Lecarrow-based urban designer eager to improve Midlands housing with international expertise
Henman Design was founded by Evan Henman following a decade of experience in Ireland, the UK, and Australia.
He is now keen to work with locals and organisations to improve housing opportunities in the Midlands.
With a master’s degree in both Architecture and Urban Design, Evan has worked extensively across a range of projects, from single-family homes, to housing estates, urban regeneration projects, high-rise residential developments and creation of new communities.
After relocating to Ireland to be closer to his wife’s family, Evan is eager to bring his expertise to the Irish market. “I’m originally from Australia, and I met my wife in London while working for major architecture and urban design firms. We decided two years ago to move back to Roscommon to be closer to family,” Evan said.
“I want to use all the experience I have gained to enhance the local area my wife grew up in. I’m extremely passionate about design, and I’m very keen to work with locals to enhance Athlone and the surrounding areas.”
Many of the projects Evan has delivered involved working closely with clients and councils to deliver strong outcomes. Dealing with complex urban sites, Evan developed problem solving skills to find creative and innovative solutions to complicated design situations.
“A lot of my experience from the UK is in getting planning for housing developments. There’s a huge need for land in towns and villages to be developed, especially with the housing crisis. That’s where my skill set comes in,” he said.
“We clearly need to release more land for residential use. That’s something I can help with, getting land re-zoned to residential in upcoming development plans and then securing planning. I know many people struggle with securing planning. Navigating the planning system is something I specialise in. As I’m looking to foster connections in the local community, I’m offering free feasibility consultations for any potential land. I’ll go out, look at the land, and assess what future development might be possible.
“For larger developments in urban areas, public consultation is essential. Engaging with the local community early helps address concerns before the planning stage. People want to contribute, especially when development is happening near them. That community engagement really helps with successful planning application outcomes.”
Henman Design offers a range of services, including planning applications, feasibility studies, preparing design documents and preparing public consultation. Evan also has an interest in working on derelict and vacant homes, helping clients access government grants to bring unused properties back into use.
“There’s huge potential in derelict homes,” he said. “Several of my projects are now getting the vacant and derelict property grants. One of my recent projects in Longford just got through planning with the full €70,000 grant.”
