Local artist’s fourth card collection inspired by Athlone landmarks
By Rebekah O'Reilly
Clonbonny artist Frank Sammon has created his fourth Christmas card collection inspired by Athlone landmarks in aid of Athlone Community Radio.
Hand-sketched with coloured pencil, the eight pack of cards features images of Athlone's Aidan Heavey Library with a focus on the Count John McCormack statue, St Mary's Church, Coosan Church, and Athlone Castle.
Frank said the reaction to the cards so far has been phenomenal, with the image of Coosan church coming out as a fan favourite.
"People are always mentioning the drawing of Coosan church. I had never drawn it before, usually I stick to landmarks in the town centre, but it's encouraging that maybe I can go further afield next year," he said.
"I had drawn a previous version of St Mary's Church that I wanted to add to, and when it came to the library, I had never drawn it before and I wanted the challenge."
This year, Frank's festive cards are being offered in more shops than ever before, including Dooley's on Magazine Road, The Grove service station, Kilmartin's N6 service station, and Brett's Pharmacy in Connaught Street.
The annual Christmas cards provide funding for Athlone Community Radio, a not-for-profit station which focuses on highlighting local voices and stories.
"They have a really important message, and I'm more than happy to create these cards to support the cause," Frank said.
"I want to thank all the shops that have stocked the cards this year, as well as Athlone Community Radio."
Each pack includes 8 high-quality cards (two of each design). The set of Christmas cards can be purchases in-store, or online at www.athlonecommunityradio.ie/athlone-community-radio-2025-christmas-cards/
Frank's cards will also be on sale at the Athlone Christmas Market, where Athlone Community Radio will host an outdoor broadcast on Sunday, December 21.
