Man in critical condition after Roscommon assault

A man is in critical condition in hospital after a serious assault in Co. Roscommon in the early hours of yesterday.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the serious assault that occurred on Barrack Street, Ballaghadereen at around 1:00am.

A male (aged in his 30s) was brought to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, where he remains in a critical condition.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed and an incident room has been established in Castlerea Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.

Any persons who were in the vicinity of Barrack Street 12:45am and 1:15am on January 1 and who may have video footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

UPDADTE: 4.30pm: Gardaí have arrested a man in connection with their investigation into the serious assault at Barrack Street, Ballaghadereen, Co Roscommon on January 1.

The man, aged in his 40s, is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a station in the Garda North Western Region.

Investigations are ongoing.
