Plans axed for Athlone community food bank

Plans for a community-led food bank in Athlone, which was set to be the first of it's kind, have been axed.

A meeting, which was set to go ahead in St Kieran's Community Centre on Thursday, January 22, will not go ahead as planned.

"It's with a heavy heart I've come to the decision that unfortunately I cannot go ahead with organising the food bank," said organiser and volunteer Lisa Malone, citing family reasons.

"Mainly it's due to family commitments and upcoming major surgery for my son. There is just not enough time in 24 hours, and my family must remain my priority.

"I'm sad to say that I am unable to commit to the project. It is a mammoth undertaking and I would want you give 100% or nothing. I hope that you understand my predicament."
