Br Bosco Cup final set for TEG Cusack Park

In what promises to be a truly historic occasion, Coláiste Mhuire, Mullingar take on Marist College, Athlone, on Saturday, February 7 in the Bro Bosco Cup decider at TEG Cusack Park (1pm).

It is a repeat of the famous 1983 Leinster final that saw the Mullingar college prevail and then captain, Seán Hynes, had the honour of raising the prestigious trophy, the successful team managed by Richie O’Donoghue.

This will be only the third time ever that two Westmeath teams contest a Leinster Schools senior final making it a special day for both second level institutions and for football in Westmeath. Some of the finest young talents will be on display, including Will Scahill (Coláiste Mhuire), scorer of 1-11 in their semi-final win over Naas CBS, and James McHugh, scorer of 3-5 for Marist College, who denied Ardee CS after extra-time.

Coláiste Mhuire are bidding to defend the Br Bosco Cup and become back-to-back Leinster champions, a feat they have never achieved. Marist College have never won the Leinster senior title so the Athlone school is bidding to make history.

There is a buzz of anticipation already in the county and a huge level of support is expected at Westmeath GAA headquarters for the big game. It has all of the ingredients for an exciting finale.

Coláiste Mhuire are managed by Dean McNicholas, alongside Brian Murtagh and Matthew Kearney. They have garnered plenty of experience, not just from last year’s great run, but from their involvement with the senior set-up for a number of years.

The Marist College management team is Fergal Wilson, Paul Kelly, Kevin Fagan, John Parker and Fiona Dempsey and they will certainly be planning to upset the reigning champions.

It’s wonderful to see the final being played in Westmeath with so many Lake County stars of the future involved.
