The Strand seating to be replaced in first quarter of 2026
Plans to install new seating and litter bins along the scenic Strand area of Athlone, on the banks of the river Shannon, are set to take place in the first quarter of 2026.
The issue was raised by Cllr John Gibbons in the January meeting of Athlone Moate Municipal District.
In response, the council executive said the new seating and bins "are in stock" and ready for placement.
They continued that the council are waiting on the completion of works related to the Main Drainage Scheme, adding that installation of the new seating and bins should occur in the first quarter of 2026.
Speaking at the December meeting, district engineer Willie Ryan said the new seating had been "ordered and paid for" but could not be placed due to "ongoing activity" in the area.
The original benches at The Strand were removed during the Covid-19 pandemic, and have not be replaced due to ongoing Athlone Main Drainage works.
In July, the council earmarked September for the installation of the new seating.
