Safety measures being considered for two junctions in Moate

Westmeath County Council is to consider a range of safety measures for two junctions in Moate which were described as being “in urgent need of work” at the January meeting of Athlone Moate Muncipal District.

Local Fine Gael councillor, Tom Farrell, tabled a notice of motion before the meeting calling for upgrades to two junctions at Mulrennans and McCormack's Garage on Main Street in Moate in the interest of pedestrian safety and car drivers.

The written response from the council said both junctions will be examinerd “in the coming weeks” with a view to considering a range of safety measures to enhance pedestrian safety such as suitable railings to “redirect pedestrians from direct conflict with cars at the point of the junction.”

The council response also noted that the regenereration team in Moate have been granted funding for the redesign of Main Street in the town through the Rural Regeneration fund. They added that the redesign of the entire core of the town will be developed throughout 2026 for phased implementation thereafter. “The two subject junctions will be re-examined and likely enhanced as part of that scheme” said the council.
