Two soccer teams from Athlone's Coláiste Chiaráin set for Connacht finals

Massive congratulations to the Coláiste Chiaráin senior boys (U20) soccer team who recently won a mammoth semi final tie versus St Muredachs, of Ballina, to reach the Connacht A final.

St Muredachs took an early two-nil lead 15 minutes into the game. But Coláiste Chiaráin fought back. Cian Gilhooly made it 2-1 before half time with a terrific free kick. John Price, from the bench midway through the second half, rifled home the equaliser.

It finished 2-2 at full time and 2-2 after 20 minutes of extra time. Some penalty shootout heroics from goalkeeper Niall Ward kept the Athlone school in the tie before Timothy Tselapedi slotted home the winning penalty to win the shootout 9-8 and send the lads to the Connacht final.

Coláiste Chiaráin now looks forward to the Connacht A final against Claregalway after the mid-term break.

The school's U17 boys soccer team also reached the Connacht A final, with a 4-3 semi-final win against Presentation Athenry after extra time

The game ended 3-3 in normal time with Jacob Zalewski scoring a hat-trick for Coláiste Chiaráin, including an injury-time equaliser.

A beautiful free kick two minutes into extra time sealed a great win.

The dream is now alive to win an incredible Connacht A final double for the boys soccer teams.
