Athlone GAA plants 250 trees as part of five-year biodiversity plan
Athlone GAA Club has planted 250 native trees at Páirc Chiaráin as part of its five-year biodiversity action plan.
The trees were planted yesterday (Sunday), with the initiative being described as "a fantastic step forward in enhancing biodiversity across our 18-acre grounds".
"Last year we commissioned a five-year biodiversity action plan, and we are proud to have since been awarded €10,000 in part-funding to help bring this plan to life," the club said.
"We’re delighted to be working in collaboration with Athlone Tidy Towns and Brian Gaynor of Trees on the Land whose expertise and support are helping us increase the number of native plants and trees throughout our grounds."
The club also extended thanks to Micheál Coughlan and the Green Committee for their work on the biodiversity action plan, and to Willie Brady and Brian Gaynor for the generous donation of trees and for their hands-on support with the planting.
The club will be planting again next Sunday, March 1.
