Athlone Town men's Under 20 team started their competitive League of Ireland season with a home win over Galway United on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts emerged victorious on a 3-2 scoreline with a 'goal of the season' contender a standout moment in the contest.

Defender Martin Scally received the ball in his own half of the pitch and slalomed his way by a number of Galway United players before finishing to the net much to the delight of his celebrating team mates.

The goal had shades of Diego Maradona's second goal for Argentina against England at the 1986 World Cup quarter-final stage in Mexico.

Zach Lawless and Will Smith also netted for the home side in their Lissywollen victory.

The year Athlone Town, under the guidance of head coach Gordon Brett, will compete in Group 2 of the men's U20 league.

During their campaign they will also play UCD, Shelbourne, Mayo FC and Sligo Rovers.
