Athlone Town teams receive civic reception honour
The Athlone Town senior and Under 19 ladies football teams were honoured with a civic reception from Westmeath County Council for their "exceptional achievements" and "contribution to the community" on Thursday evening.
The senior ladies team completed a historic Women's National League Premier Division and FAI Cup double in 2025, while the Under 19 squad recorded back-to-back league titles.
Addressing the players and management of both squads, Town Mayor, Cllr Vinny McCormack said the ladies of Athlone Town AFC had written a remarkable new chapter in the sporting history of the community.
"For generations, sport has played a central role in bringing our community together, in our schools, in our clubs, and in the stands of our grounds.
"When the senior women’s team was formed in 2020, it marked the beginning of something very special for football in Athlone and in the short number of years since, the team has achieved a level of success that is simply extraordinary.
"Seven major national honours, two Women’s Premier Division titles, two FAI Cups, and three Presidents Cups, is an achievement that speaks volumes about the quality, dedication and ambition within this group.
"Every time this team takes to the pitch they do so with determination, pride, and a genuine connection to the town they represent," the Mayor said.
Referencing the achievements of the Under 19 players, Cllr McCormack said it was "a clear sign of the strength of the pathway being built within the club".
"These talented young footballers represent the future of the Athlone Town, and judging by what we have already seen, that future is very bright indeed," Cllr McCormack added.
The Mayor commended the work "behind the scenes" of both team managements.
"Your leadership, guidance and commitment have been central to the success we are celebrating today," the Mayor continued.
Citing the player's as being "role models for young people across our community", the Mayor said both teams allowed young girls "to dream".
"They can see a pathway, an opportunity, and a dream that is very much within reach.
"The players have given supporters moments of excitement and pride, they have brought people together in celebration, and they have lifted the spirits of the whole community.
"Athlone is immensely proud of you. We look forward to supporting you in the seasons ahead, and we look forward with great excitement to the many more proud moments that surely lie ahead for this club," the Mayor concluded
