First of two Athlone €1 million lotto wins claimed by a syndicate

A Westmeath syndicate has been announced as the winner of the first of two €1 million National Lottery wins in Athlone which, remarkably, occurred within less than a week of each other.

The syndicate purchased its lucky ticket at Corrib Oil, on the Ballymahon Road in Athlone and then took the top prize of €1 million in last Wednesday's Lotto Plus One draw (March 25).

In a press release issued on behalf of the National Lottery, the syndicate revealed that special measures were taken to keep the ticket safe in the days since the win.

"After much debate, we eventually agreed that the safest place for the ticket was inside a coffee jar in the kitchen – a hiding spot no one would find!

"And any time I needed to pop out of the house, I brought the ticket with me, I didn’t want to be without it," said one of the syndicate's members. "You could say this ticket has been on tour all over the county with me since the big win!"

The members of the syndicate are looking forward to enjoying their winnings, with home improvements and holidays high on the list for the year ahead.

Earlier this week it emerged that a ticket purchased in Athlone had also won €1 million when it claimed the top prize in Monday's Daily Million draw. The lucky ticket on Monday had been purchased in SuperValu in Monksland.
