Drama masterpiece set for Athlone Little Theatre stage
Athlone Little Theatre is counting down to its next production Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello, directed by Ekiñe Azcárate, from April 15-22.
Having cut her teeth directing the one-acts in Athlone Little Theatre and treading the boards on stage in recent years, this is Ekiñe’s directorial debut at the helm of a three-act play and it promises to a spectacular theatrical experience.
All the way from Argentina, the director and actress brings a strong foundation in drama from her studies in her home country, where training emphasises emotional truth and experimentation.
This background, combined with her experience as a performer, makes her ideally suited to bring a bona fide theatre classic to life with a large talented local cast boasting both newcomers and experienced performers.
Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello is a groundbreaking play in which an acting company’s rehearsal is gatecrashed by six characters who insist their life story deserves to be told on stage. The result is a masterpiece of drama which is at times comic, haunting and ultimately thought-provoking.
First performed in 1921, this modern classic is a ‘play within a play’ exploring the nature of the human personality where the boundaries between fiction and reality begin to blur. It continues to have a profound influence on theatre and film more than a century after it was first produced.
It’s a must-see for anyone who enjoys innovative theatre that pushes the boundaries of storytelling, according to Ekiñe Azcárate.
