Made in the Midlands: The Athlone Bookshop
Tucked into a growing hub of independent businesses, The Athlone Bookshop is quietly redefining what a modern bookstore can be.
At its heart is Stephen Reynolds, a lifelong bookseller whose passion for the trade has shaped a space that is as much about community as it is about literature.
Stephen’s journey began in London with Waterstones, which sparked a career spanning more than two decades. Rising through the ranks of Dublin’s busiest stores, he later spent eight years with WH Smith in Arnotts.
Finally in July 2021, he took a leap opening his own independent bookshop, The Athlone Bookshop. Located in The Village @ Burgess on Lloyd's Lane, the shop has a unique offering and an inviting atmosphere.
The store is opened seven days a week from 10am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
“Opening my own was a chance to create something more personal, somewhere people could browse, discover, and enjoy being," Stephen said.
The Athlone Bookshop offers a carefully curated selection that goes beyond the mainstream, encouraging readers to linger and explore.
From manga and fantasy to the works of Plato and Marcus Aurelius, the range of interests reflects a new generation engaging with books in their own way.
Another unexpected addition has been the introduction of products from Games Workshop, bringing a new community of hobbyists through the door.
The move has helped foster a local Warhammer scene, adding a social and interactive dimension to the shop’s offering.
For Stephen, it all comes back to connection between readers, and within the wider community.
“Small shops rely on people coming through the door,” he said. “When they do, we can offer something you won’t find anywhere else.”
