Garrycastle GAA launches ‘Rooted in our Community’

Garrycastle GAA launched its new ‘Rooted in our Community’ biodiversity and sustainability initiative recently, marking a significant milestone in the club’s commitment to enhancing its natural environment and strengthening community engagement.

The launch event brought together members young and old, with representatives from Athlone Tidy Towns joining the club to officially mark the beginning of this long‑term environmental programme. Despite poor weather conditions, the club’s nursery players enthusiastically helped plant the first 40 native trees, the opening phase of an ambitious plan to plant 200 trees over the next 12 months. Their energy and excitement set a positive tone for what promises to be a lasting project for the club and wider community.

A particularly meaningful part of the morning was the planting of a special tree in honour of Garrycastle GAA’s five founding members: Jack Veale, Felim Finnegan, Seamus Nugent, Dan Hogan and Eddie Martin. This commemorative planting serves as a permanent and fitting tribute to the individuals whose dedication and vision established the foundations of the club. The tree will grow as a living reminder of their contribution to the community.

The initiative is led by the club’s Green Team Committee, chaired by Michael Gantley, in partnership with Brian Gaynor from ‘Trees on our Land’ and Willie Brady from Athlone Tidy Towns, who have worked tirelessly over recent months to prepare for the launch. Their efforts include planning, sourcing native species and coordinating community involvement to ensure the project delivers long‑term environmental benefits.

As part of ‘Rooted in our Community’, Garrycastle GAA is offering members, families and supporters the opportunity to sponsor or plant a tree. This allows individuals to honour a loved one, celebrate a family name or create a lasting legacy on the club grounds. Each tree will contribute to a greener, healthier landscape while giving families a permanent connection to the club.

Supporting the work of the Green Team, the club’s Red Team has been established to promote the programme, communicate its aims and encourage participation throughout the wider community.

Future plans within the initiative include: a designated tree walk; educational signage highlighting the importance of biodiversity; and a legacy trail recognising all families, patrons and members who support the project. These additions will create an attractive, informative and environmentally rich space for players, visitors and the local community. The club extends sincere thanks to Brian Gaynor and Willie Brady for their invaluable help, guidance and expertise in getting the initiative off the ground. Their support has been instrumental in shaping the programme and ensuring its successful launch.

Garrycastle GAA is inviting anyone with an interest in the outdoors, planting or environmental projects to get involved in the ongoing work. For more information or to volunteer with the Green Team, contact: Michael (086 303 9508) or Karen (087 901 4877).
