Roscommon to face Tyrone in knockout clash next weekend

Roscommon have been drawn against Tyrone in the All-Ireland SFC preliminary quarter-finals.

As Tyrone finished second in their group, they will have home advantage for the game which will take place next weekend. The fixture details will be confirmed later today, but Roscommon will be travelling to Healy Park, Omagh on either Saturday or Sunday.

Roscommon secured a place in the preliminary quarter-finals with victory over Cavan in a high-scoring contest in Longford on Saturday (3-20 to 1-20). The Roscommon goals were scored by Diarmuid Murtagh (who finished with a tally of 1-6), Enda Smith and team captain Brian Stack.

Tyrone secured second place in their group with victory over Cork in Tullamore last Saturday.

Roscommon's first match in this year's Allianz Football League was a defeat away to Tyrone. Interestingly, Roscommon also met Tyrone in this year's All-Ireland U-20 semi-final, in which the Ulster side claimed an impressive victory en route to winning the All-Ireland crown.

The draw for the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals took place on RTE's Morning Ireland programme this morning, with the meeting of Mayo and Derry the standout fixture to emerge from the draw.

Mayo came agonisingly close to beating Dublin only for the All-Ireland champions to equalise from the last play of the game at Hyde Park yesterday (Sunday). Kevin McStay's side will be at home to Division 1 league champions Derry, who eliminated Westmeath by winning in Newry on Saturday night (2-7 to 0-9).

In the other games, Connacht champions Galway will host Monaghan (winners over Meath yesterday) and Louth will take on Cork. Galway missed the chance to advance directly to the All-Ireland quarter-finals after being forced to settle for a draw with Armagh yesterday.

Louth are entitled to home advantage against Cork but they are expected to nominate Inniskeen in Monaghan as the venue, as they don't have a suitable venue for such a fixture in their own county at present.

The four teams already through to the All-Ireland quarter-finals are Dublin, Kerry, Armagh and Donegal.
