Taking care of your mind, body and soul at Crossfit Croí

This month Crossfit Croí is celebrating eight years in business. Having come through multiple lockdowns through Covid and a big premises move to a new location, the future is looking bright.

As well as Crossfit, we have also become HYROX affiliated. While both fitness models have similarities, there are enough differences for people to get benefits from both types.

We have added a Ladies Only and a Men’s Only class, both of which are suitable for all levels from complete beginners to advanced athletes. These classes are based on a Strength and Conditioning format and offer a Full Body Workout.

They have also added an Over-50s class in the last couple of months to the schedule.

These classes are suitable for people who have never been in a gym and would like to know how and where to get started, but equally suitable for those who have some knowledge of gym movements. It is suitable for Men and Women over 50. It’s a mix of flexibility, strength and some cardiovascular work. Everything is adapted to the ability of the individual.

“We all know the importance of Physical Activity for longevity and we are hoping to help as many people get more active and physically and mentally strong in the process,” said Crossfit Croí.

We know that the health guidelines, as set out in the HSE Irish Physical Activity Plan, are that every adult needs 150-300 minutes per week of physical activity (cardio) and two to three Strength sessions per week, as a minimum for Health. We also know from figures collected that only 46% of adults meet that requirement.

These figures can seem daunting to someone looking to start implementing some activity, but we suggest coming in to speak to one of us and we can put a plan in place to get you started and that will fit into your week. One of our mantras is, “Movement is Medicine”. You are never too old to start building strength or improving bone density. This also includes men, bone and muscle strength is not just a female concern.

We can confidently say that physical activity and exercise hugely improves mental health and wellbeing. It will also help you get a good night's sleep. We see people come into class with all the stresses of life and possibly muscle/joint soreness but leave without them

We all know there’s an epidemic of mental health issues. There are some scary statistics out there. Did you know:

* Suicide is the leading cause of death in men Under 50

* 25% of men live with a mental illness

We need to address these figures as a society, but we believe that if we can create an environment that is open, welcoming and inclusive, we can help. Everyone supports each other and lifts each other up, both figuratively in workouts and emotionally through friendships forged.

Our Men’s Only classes are strength and conditioning based and are also suitable for beginners and advanced alike.

We have also expanded places in our very popular Yoga classes. These classes also improve muscular endurance and help flexibility and mobility as well as reducing brain stresses with breathwork in each class.

We will be adding a very new and exciting feature to our schedule in the New Year, keep an eye on our social media platforms for news on that. We offer a free first class for everyone who wants to try out any of our classes, so don’t wait till January to start getting stronger.

You are never too old to start increasing your physical activity. It’s not just about longevity, we want as many people as we can help, to not only live longer, but to be able to live in a functional body. To be able to do whatever activities they want to be able to do, from carrying their own groceries to hiking, and everything in between.

The activities of a person in their 20s is no different to a person in their 80s, its only difference is by degree of intensity, not by kind.

“We have to train for the last decade of our lives. We don’t train for the present: We train for the future. It’s a different mindset” - Dr Peter Attia

There’s a quote that is sometimes attributed to Henry Ford that says, “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” We will help show you, and help you get stronger, more flexible and empower you to believe that you can do whatever you want, and age is not a limit. Young or not so young.
