Marist College honoured on the double at Connacht Rugby awards
The on field success of Marist College, both individually and collectively, was recognised at the Connacht Rugby awards in the Galmont Hotel Galway on Saturday night.
The Athlone secondary school were awarded the 'School of the Year' honour reflective of their extremely successful season during which the Marist claimed the Senior 'A' Cup and League, as well as the Junior 'A' Cup. The school were also finalists in the U14 'A' League/Cup.
Andrew Henson claimed a second accolade for the Marist College, the talented back winning the 'U18 Player of the Year' award for his performances en route to winning the provincial title for his school, the Buccaneers player scoring the all important winning try in the final success over Sligo Grammar School.
Speaking following the awards success Marist College teacher Mick Loftus said it was a great honour to accept the 'School of the Year' award on behalf of all the volunteers who have contributed to rugby and extra-curricular activities at the school.
"We are a multi-sports school and I wish to thank to all the teachers and volunteers who give of their time so freely.
"I would like to particularly thank our school management and staff for their support, Tony Dolan and Sam Fogarty for their time and expertise working with the players and our school coaches Mr Broderick, Ms Turner and Mr Malone.
"I would also like to thank Tom O Neill, Lorcan Withers and Ryan Bruton for capturing the great moments of the season," Mick said.
