RTÉ Archives looks back on 2001 search for Lough Ree Monster

In recent days, RTÉ Archives took a look back at a visit by an international underwater search team which came to the Midlands hoping to locate the Lough Ree Monster in 2001.

The myserious underwater creature known as the Lough Ree Monster was first spotted in 1960 by a group of three priests who were out on a fishing trip.

The RTÉ cameras filmed a report 24 years ago on the visit by Jan Sundberg from Sweden, Espen Samuelsen from Norway, and Nick Sucik, a US marine, who were searching for the "unknown animal" that they felt could be a "horse eel".

Their week on the lake found no trace of horse eel or any other such creature, but the report said the group remained "open minded" and that, if there were more sightings in future, they would return.
