Council to welcome Rhode Island delegation in August visit

Westmeath County Council will formally welcome a visiting delegation from Providence, Rhode Island, later this summer, as part of ongoing efforts to honour shared Irish-American heritage and foster international civic links.

Councillors approved a Corporate Policy Group recommendation that the Athlone–Moate Municipal District grant an address of welcome to the visiting party, which is due to arrive during the week ending August 1, as part of a recent formal twinning agreement with Athlone.

The arrangement stems from long-standing connections between the Midlands and the Irish-American community in Rhode Island, many of whom can trace their roots to Westmeath and surrounding counties.

Council officials described the upcoming visit as an opportunity to deepen international relationships, promote tourism, and celebrate the county’s global diaspora. A formal reception and cultural programme are expected to form part of the visit, though final arrangements are still to be confirmed.

The visiting delegation is expected to include civic leaders, heritage representatives, and members of Irish-American cultural groups.

Their stay will coincide with local summer events, offering an opportunity to showcase Westmeath’s cultural life and hospitality.
