Athlone swimmers shine on national stage in Limerick

After four thrilling days of top class swimming, the 2025 Irish National Age Group Championships drew to a close on Sunday evening at the University of Limerick campus.

The event, held from July 10–13, saw hundreds of the country’s most talented young swimmers take to the pool, with the standard of competition matching the electric atmosphere in the venue.

Among those who made their mark were the exceptional swimmers from Athlone Swimming Club, who turned in a string of impressive performances that highlighted not only their athletic talent but also their camaraderie and sportsmanship.

Congratulations to the Athlone SC team as follows: Donnacha Duane, Aeron Moran, Max Mullane, Saoirse Lynam, Aimee Greene, Bobby O'Brien, James McLoughlin and Will Browne.

Simply qualifying for Nationals is a significant milestone — an achievement that speaks volumes for the hard work and dedication these athletes have put in over the season.

Throughout the meet, the Athlone squad achieved numerous personal bests, certificate of improvement times, and earned spots in coveted finals.

The highlights included the following: Will Browne – A final, 50-metre Freestyle; Will Browne – B final, 100-metre Freestyle; Bobby O'Brien, – B final, 100m Breaststroke (Silver – most improved time); Aeron Moran – A final, 100m Backstroke (Gold – most improved time); Max Mullane, – B finals in 200m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, and 100m Backstroke.

Each swimmer displayed tremendous grit, pushing themselves to new heights across heats and finals alike. The achievements are made all the more special by the team spirit that radiated from the Athlone Swimming Club deck — a true show of mutual encouragement and collective pride.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Athlone Swimming Club head coach Denise Dolan, whose leadership, motivation, and unwavering support were instrumental to the team’s success. Her powerful team talks and tireless dedication provided the foundation for the club's stellar showing in Limerick.

The club also extends appreciation to Swim Ireland and the many dedicated officials and volunteers whose efforts made this national event a resounding success.

With sights now set on the next chapter, Athlone Swimming Club’s competitors return home inspired, confident, and proud, and also ready for the next sporting challenge.
