Garrycastle making mark in early stages of senior club football championship

Garrycastle are one of two teams with successive wins in this year's Westmeath senior club football championship following the conclusion of the second phase of group fixtures.

Gary Dolan's charges head Section B of this year's competition following wins over Moate All Whites and Killucan in their opening encounters.

Garrycastle will be hoping their positive run of form continues when they play St Malachy's in their third Section B game on Sunday week as they aim for the top tier of senior club championship football and a place in the knockout stage of this year's competition.

Meanwhile, neighbours Athlone also remain undefeated in this year's senior club football championship.

Holding a ten point lead in their opening game against St Loman's, the Section A Shannonsiders were reeled in by the reigning county champions with a draw the outcome of the game.

Such was the manner in which this result unfolded, Athlone started their second fixture against Mullingar Shamrocks in ponderous fashion but soon gained in game dominance, particularly in the second half, to run out five point winners.

Eoin Jordan's charges play Tyrrellspass (who are pointless after their opening two games) in their third championship game on Saturday week knowing a win would virtually secure a knockout stage berth for Athlone.

Akin to Garrycastle, The Downs have two successive wins from their opening championship fixtures.

Having lost the county final on penalties in 2024, Dermot Power's charges will be hoping to go one better this year and their early scoring form and manner of their performances augurs well for their remaining group phase fixtures.

Moate All Whites, Caulry and Tang are the remaining South Westmeath clubs contesting for this year's Flanagan Cup.

All feature in Section B and will have to top the group or conclude their round robin phase fixtures in second place to advance to the knockout stage of the competition.

Both Moate and Caulry have one win to date with a brace of points respectively claimed against Tang and St Malachy's.

Tang have yet to claim a point, with losses to St Malachy's and the All Whites in their opening two games.

The third round of senior club football championship fixtures takes place the weekend of August 22.
