New sport on the scene at The Planet

A new sport is making its mark in Athlone, with The Planet leading the way.

The venue’s three brand-new, state-of-the-art indoor padel courts officially opened on Friday, August 1, attracting strong interest from the local community.

The Planet’s team has been working for seven to eight months to bring the courts to life, and early feedback from players has been overwhelmingly positive.

Padel is known as a social and accessible sport, combining elements of squash and tennis. One of its key differences from tennis is that the ball is always in play, and it is generally easier to pick up.

The court is smaller than a tennis court and are fully enclosed, allowing the ball to bounce, similar to squash.

The Planet courts are also fully indoors, meaning players can enjoy the game without worrying about the weather.

The booking system for The Planet’s padel courts in Athlone is now live. Players can reserve a court for a team of four or make an open booking for two people, allowing others to join.

Although doubles is the most common format, padel can also be played by just two people.

Rackets are available for rent at The Planet Athlone, and balls can be purchased on-site.
