Local player scores in tournament win for Ireland
Coláiste Chiaráin student Sophie Byrne played a prominent role as the Republic of Ireland women's U17 team defeated Slovenia in their opening game of an international tournament in North East Italy on Wednesday.
The Shamrock Rovers player scored the third goal in a 4-0 win over their Eastern European opponents.
Byrne is one of three local players in the Republic of Ireland tournament squad.
Athlone Town duo Emma Mooney and Abbie Duffy have also travelled to the quadrangular tournament. Mooney featured in the first half of yesterday's contest while Duffy was an unused substitute.
In a game that was abandoned on the hour mark due to torrential rain conditions, goals from Amelia Fahey, Halle Harcourt, Byrne and Keelin Comiskey had Ireland in a commanding position before play was halted.
The tournament, in which Italy and North Macedonia are competing, will see each team play three games across five days.
These games will aid the team's preparation for their upcoming UEFA European Championship qualifiers against Belgium, France and Germany in late October.
