Popular Athlone post mistress retires after 27 years
By Rebekah O'Reilly
Mount Temple native Geraldine Parker retired from her role as Post Mistress in Athlone Town Centre post office on Friday last (September 5).
Geraldine began her career in the Mardyke Street post office in 1974, building close relationships with her loyal customers along the way.
She served as Post Mistress for the past 27 years, working up to 6 days per week.
"It was an easier way of life back then, everybody used the post office,"
Geraldine told the Westmeath Independent. "Things are more complicated now, but I've enjoyed every minute of it.
"When asked whether she had any plans on how she will spend her retirement, Geraldine said she's looking forward to spending more time at home.
"I'm looking forward to having some free time now. I was on basically 24/7.
“Today (Monday, September 8) is my first day off, so I'm looking forward to relaxing!"
Mrs Parker has five grandchildren aged between 14 and 21, who she is looking forward to spending more time with, and she also hopes to take up some new hobbies.
"I haven't decided yet, but it won't be golf anyways! I've been thinking of joining the knitting group, and I'm looking forward to more time at home baking and reading."
Despite her retirement, Geraldine plans to maintain a presence in the post office working the odd Friday.
"I would miss the girls, my pensioners, and my loyal customers too much otherwise," she added.
The role of Post Master has been taken over by Portumna native Declan Madden, who stepped into the role on Friday last.
"My advice to Declan would be to be helpful and friendly to the customers.
That's the main thing."
