Public consultation event this Monday on proposed Kiltoom road safety works
Roscommon County Council will be holding a drop-in public consultation event this coming Monday, November 3, in relation to proposed road safety works on the busy N61 Athlone to Roscommon road in Kiltoom.
The consultation event will be held in the Hodson Bay Hotel from 3pm to 7pm on Monday.
It's inviting people to "have their say" on the works project which has been named the St Brigid's Road Safety Improvement Scheme, in reference to the local GAA club.
The council said the proposed project will consist of a "junction optimisation scheme" for St Brigid's GAA and the surrounding junctions on a 1.8-kilometre stretch of the N61, commencing 0.6km north of the Kiltoom Road/N61 Junction and extending northwards.
"Within this 1.8km stretch, the N61 intersects with five local roads, creating a total of six junctions," said the council. "Notably, the crossroads formed by the L-7554 and L-7556 (St Brigid's) is considered the most hazardous, having recorded five collisions."
The local authority said this area of the N61 "exhibits a high density of junctions and accesses," including five T-junctions, one crossroads, ten house accesses, and three field accesses.
It said many of these access points onto the N61 "do not meet current standards and pose a significant safety risk due to non-compliant features such as incorrect approach gradients, approach angles, or positioning".
Maps and design options showing the road safety works proposed in the area are due to be made available for public viewing at the consultation event in the Hodson Bay Hotel on Monday.
A online 'consultation portal' on the project, meanwhile, is currently open on the council's website (here) and is due to remain open until Friday, November 7.
