High profile basketball appointment for Athlone man
Athlone's Ciarán Kiveney has been appointed as the new men's team head coach of Cork basketball club Neptune, one of the sport's traditional powers in Ireland.
Kiveney has served as a player, coach and chairperson of Athlone Basketball Club.
He joins Neptune from the Galway-based Titans club and replaces Keith Daly, who was recently relieved of his duties after Neptune lost their first five league games of the season, leaving them bottom of the Super League table.
Expressing delight over the appointment of Kiveney, Neptune said Ciarán joins "following a successful tenure with Titans Basketball Club, where he established a reputation for developing young talent".
Commenting on his new role, Kiveney described it as "an incredible honour" to take on the head coach position "at a club with such a rich tradition and history".
"Neptune has a proud history in Irish basketball, and I’m excited to build on that legacy with hard work, teamwork, and a shared commitment to success. I can’t wait to get started with the players and staff, and meet the club's many supporters,” added Coosan resident Ciarán.
Neptune (the club's full name for sponsorship reasons is now Energywise Ireland Neptune Basketball Club) holds the record for the number of Super League titles with 11. Based in Blackpool, the Cork outfit has also five National Cup crowns to their credit.
"Kiveney brings with him a wealth of coaching experience and a deep understanding of Irish basketball. Known for his dynamic leadership and commitment to player development, he has been instrumental in elevating standards both on and off the court at every level he’s coached, including Ireland underage programmes," said Energywise Ireland Neptune, adding that his appointment "marks a new chapter" for the club.
“We are thrilled to welcome Ciarán to the Neptune“ said Energywise Ireland Neptune chairman Ian O'Brien.
“Ciarán’s passion and experience align perfectly with the club. We believe he will play a key role in driving our senior team forward and inspiring the next generation of Neptune players.”
