"Defining moment" as Athlone Town appoint new Technical Director

Athlone Town have confirmed the appointment of Brian Shelly as the club's new Technical Director.

In his role, Shelly will have responsibility for the implementation of Athlone Town's new Player Development Pathway Plan, a cornerstone of the club's long term football vision to ensure the development of players and coaches from from the academy right through to the first team.

A statement issued by the club said the appointment 'represents a transformative milestone for Athlone Town'.

'Brian joins Athlone Town with an outstanding background, bringing over 15 years of experience and professionalism in multiple domains across Australia and New Zealand, combined with a highly successful playing career in the League of Ireland.

'Under Brian’s leadership, both players and coaches will be nurtured and challenged to reach elite levels of performance, supported by consistent standards, shared values, and a unified football philosophy.

'We believe this approach will enable us to grow our own talent through aligned practices and genuine buy-in from everyone within the football department. The goal is simple but ambitious: to make Athlone Town a benchmark club for player and coach development in Ireland'.

The club added that Shelly would also drive the strengthening of community relations and the establishment of long-term partnerships with clubs across the Midlands region.

'His passion for player development in this country and his understanding of the key elements that create a successful dressing room and football department will be invaluable as we take the next steps in our evolution'.

Speaking on his appointment, Shelly said his aim was to create a consistency, support the club's coaches and strengthen the connection between all parts of the club and the wider football community.

"It’s about continuing to build a clear, connected pathway that helps both players and coaches grow, and I’m looking forward to working with everyone to keep the club moving in a positive direction," Shelly said.

Steven Gray, CEO of Athlone Town, described the appointment as a "massive moment" for the club.

"This appointment represents a huge step forward in the professionalisation of our football practices and structures. It marks a defining moment in the continued growth and ambition of our club.

"Brian’s role is clear – to oversee our football department, women’s, men’s, academy and community partners," Gray stated.

The new Technical Director will commence his role on Monday, December 1.
