An 'Art for Hope' art exhibition will be displayed at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Coosan, starting from this Sunday, November 16.

Athlone public invited to share 'Art for Hope' in parish initiative

St Mary's Parish in Athlone is inviting people of all faiths to contribute to a special art competition and gallery exhibition celebrating the Jubilee Year of Hope.

The parish team is encouraging the local community to pick up their paint brushes, pencils, and imaginations for the 'Art for Hope' initiative.

Open to all primary and secondary school students, as well as community members of all ages, the event encourages participants to reflect on what hope means to them and to share that vision through art.

"Hope is something we all need more of," said Pia Becerra, a member of the parish team. "We wanted to create a space where young people and families can express that feeling in a joyful and creative way."

Whether it's a painting, drawing, or collage, every piece will contribute to a collective celebration of positivity.

The 'Art for Hope' Gallery will open this Sunday, November 16, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Coosan, where it will remain on display throughout the week. Visitors are encouraged to drop in, view the artwork, and enjoy the uplifting atmosphere.

The celebration will culminate on Sunday, November 23, following the 12pm Mass, when the winning entries will be announced and prizes awarded. The top secondary school artist will receive €100, while the primary school winner will take home a high-quality art set.

Entries from the public can be submitted between November 16 and 23, with drop-off points available at the St Mary’s Parish Office or after Masses. Each entry should include the student's name, class, and a guardian's phone number on the back.

While the competition highlights the talent of local students, anyone in the community, regardless of religious affiliation, is welcome to contribute artwork to the general gallery. The parish hopes the project will bring people together in a shared celebration of creativity, hope, and community spirit.

"Through art, we can express what words sometimes can’t — our hopes, dreams, and resilience," added Omolayo N. Oyudo, one of the organisers. "We can’t wait to see what our young artists create."
