Tang appoint former club and county star as manager

Former Westmeath star Paul Conway has been appointed as manager of his home club, Tang.

A Leinster championship medal winner with Westmeath in 2004, Conway gave distinguished and lengthy service to the maroon and white colours of his club and county.

His "'insurance point' in the famous victory over Dublin in 2004 is still fondly remembered by Westmeath supporters.

In addition to Leinster success with Westmeath, another memorable moment in Conway's playing career came back in 1993, when he scored the winning point as Tang defeated near neighbours Maryland in the Westmeath final replay.

Tang GAA said it was "delighted" to announce Conway as manager of the club's senior team for the 2026 season.

"As a player and supporter, Paul has always been involved in Tang and Maryland/Tang and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role. He will be assisted by Alan Higgins, Damien Kelly, Michael Bannon and Joe Conlon," said the club.

Conway succeeds Longford man Stephen Coy, who was Tang manager for the 2025 campaign.

In this year's Westmeath Senior Football Championship, Tang defied all expectations by avoiding relegation in almost miraculous fashion. Against St Malachy's in the relegation play-off, Tang found themselves five points behind in extra-time and down to 13 men, but they somehow forced a draw, before prevailing on penalties.

Furthermore, Tang went into the championship without several key players from the previous year's team for various reasons.

In addition to a previous spell as manager of Tang, Conway has plenty of other experience in coaching and management.

Conway guided Moate All Whites to Westmeath and Leinster junior club titles, and he was a Westmeath senior selector during Tomás Ó Flatharta's time in charge. He also managed what was then known as the Athlone IT senior football team in the Sigerson Cup.

Tang will compete in Section B of next year's Westmeath SFC alongside Moate, Athlone, Tyrrellspass, Killucan and intermediate champions Tubberclair.

It's a group which will involve several local derbies and interesting fixtures. Only two of those teams will make it to the knockout stages, but Tang's main aim is again likely to be preserving senior status.
