New 12‑unit domestic violence refuge to open in Athlone in two years

Esker House recently received approval to build a 12‑unit refuge in Athlone, and it has now been revealed that the development is set to open in three to three and a half years.
The service, established in 1982, currently operates a four‑unit refuge in Athlone, as well as a 24‑hour helpline, community outreach, child and youth support, and court accompaniment.
Speaking at the recent Westmeath Independent Community and Sports Awards, Deirdre Berry said it was hoped that the new refuge could be in place in approximately two and a half years' time.
"We've gotten approval to build a 12-unit refuge here in Athlone, so are past the first stage of planning and we're hoping to move into that in maybe two and a half years," she said.
The new facility is set to provide safe, secure accommodation and enhanced support services for women and children fleeing domestic abuse.
Ms Berry noted that number of people seeking support for domestic abuse is rising year on year.
"Last year we had a 49% increase on our helpline from the previous year, from January to September. I don't think that domestic violence is happening more, I think more people have the courage and the strength to come forward.
"Our society is saying that (domestic violence) is not acceptable, and people are standing up."
