Slimming World update brings new flexibility for 2026
Slimming World groups in Athlone and Moate have announced a series of updates to their healthy eating plan, which will launch from January 2026. The changes include saying goodbye to the term ‘Syns’ and introducing a new healthy fats category, designed to make the plan even more flexible, supportive and in line with modern healthy eating guidance.
Pauline Bliss, who runs the Slimming World group in St Kieran’s Community Centre, Athlone, says: “Following a review of Slimming World’s language and terminology, we’ll be saying goodbye to the term ‘Syns’. At the same time, a new healthy fats category will be introduced, making it easier for members to include foods such as avocado, olive oil and nut butters, while highlighting their health benefits.”
Sharleen Doyle, who runs the Moate group in The Dun na Si Heritage Centre, adds: “Slimming World’s ethos hasn’t changed since it was founded in 1969. Our focus has always been on inspiring positive mindset changes and helping people develop lasting healthy habits, within a culture of care, respect and understanding.”
Carol Doran Joyce, who runs the group in The Bower, Athlone, says the update is particularly relevant now: “With the growing popularity of weight loss medications, evidence-based support like Slimming World’s is more important than ever. We want everyone to feel welcome in our groups, whether they’re using medication or not. Language matters, and the term ‘Syns’ was sometimes misunderstood or became a barrier for people seeking support.”
Sinead Morris, who runs the group in The Shamrock Lodge, explains that Slimming World’s flexible plan is centred around more than 350 Free Foods, including lean proteins, fruit, vegetables, grains, potatoes and pasta, which can be enjoyed without weighing or measuring.
She says: “From January 2026, higher energy-density foods such as alcohol, crisps and chocolate will be referred to as Swips, (Slimming World's Individual Picks) reinforcing that no food is banned and that enjoyment without guilt supports long-term success. Healthy Extras will also expand to include healthy fats, alongside calcium and fibre-rich foods.”
New member packs featuring these updates will be available in groups from late December.
