St Peter's FC seek to upgrade facilities

Athlone football club St Peter's FC has submitted a planning application to Roscommon County Council for the upgrade and enhancement of its facilities at McCarthy Park.

The club is requesting permission from the local authority to replace its existing astro-turf facility with a new 66 x 96 metre astro-turf and the installation of a walking track approximately 550 metres in length.

The application also proposes the inclusion of a 1.2 metre high galvanised fence, a LED flood light system for both the astro-turf and walking track and all associated drainage and site works necessary to complete the development.

Formed in 1980, St Peter's FC is based in McCarthy Park on the west side of Athlone and field teams at a number of teams at underage level in the Midlands Schoolboys/girls League. The club's senior men's team are the current holders of the Combined Counties Football League (CCFL) Senior Division title.

In an April 2023 interview with the Westmeath Independent, then club chairperson Padraig Hegarty said St Peter's had "ambitious plans to redevelop its home ground of McCarthy Park".

The planning application was submitted to Roscommon County Council on December 10 with a decision expected on February 12 2026.
