Residents call for end to illegal dumping at Athlone bog

The chairperson of Moydrum Residents' Association has expressed his ongoing frustration with the unsightly dumping of illegal waste on a public road through Annagortha Bog in close proximity to houses within the community.

Speaking this week, Seamus Fagan said the problem was "not going away" with the issue a serious concern for residents in the locality.

The residents' committee had a post-Christmas litter 'pick-up' and were angered by the waste matter disposed in the bog.

As a deterrent, the chairperson said "plans are in place" to erect a barrier at the entrance to Annagortha Bog to prevent such illegal dumping at the site and he is hopeful that this will prove to be the case.

He also highlighted health and safety concerns potentially caused by the illegal disposal of waste matter at the site.

"The fall off from a number of waste materials illegally dumped in the bog seeps into the local Breensford River which eventually makes its way to Lough Ree, which is then consumed in due course by the public. This is a major health concern," Mr Fagan said.

The chairperson said the residents are no longer surprised by what they find dumped at Annagortha bog.

"Waste matter such as used nappies, tyres, chairs, tables and oil drums are just typical of some of the items illegally dumped. On occasion, dead animals have also been left on the site," Mr Fagan added.

The chairperson commended the council for their support and assistance to date.

"The council have been of great assistance to our residents' committee. They collect and dispose of our bagged rubbish, while we also received a grant from the council towards the barrier which we hope to erect very soon," the chairperson concluded.
