Sarsfield Square resurfacing works completes a €500,000 investment - Cllr O'Rourke

Long-awaited road resurfacing works began this week at Sarsfield Square following the securing of €165,000 in council funding.

Cllr Aengus O’Rourke said the funding was approved in March 2025 after a lengthy period of negotiations, and will allow for the full resurfacing of roads throughout the estate.

“For over a decade, I have worked closely with residents in the area, and during that time I was the only elected public representative to consistently attend residents’ meetings,” Cllr O’Rourke said.

“Together with the Residents Association, we have delivered many projects for the area.”

Cllr O’Rourke, who is also a committee member of the Sarsfield Square Residents Association, said residents were informed of the successful funding application on 11 March 2025.

“Everyone was genuinely delighted,” he said. “This work was overdue, but given the scale of the investment it did take a couple of years to ring-fence the necessary funding.”

He also paid tribute to the cooperation of the local residents’ group.

“I want to sincerely thank Philip Woods, Chairman of the Residents Association, and all the active members for the great cooperation they have given me as I fought for important investments in Sarsfield Square,” he said.

The resurfacing works form part of a wider programme of improvements in the area. Two years ago Love Lane was resurfaced and new LED lighting installed, while Active Travel funding was secured to tarmacadam the car-parking area beside the community centre and soccer pitch.

“The resurfacing of the roads in the estate completes a huge investment in Sarsfield Square that I was proud to lobby for, lead on and deliver,” Cllr O’Rourke said.

The total investment in the area is estimated to be in the region of €500,000.

Cllr O’Rourke said honesty and transparency are vital when it comes to public works.

“Residents deserve honesty and accuracy when it comes to public works in their community,” he said.

“My focus remains on working with residents and council staff to improve neighbourhoods and communities.”
