'Monumental' 103-metre Brigid's Cloak to be displayed in Athlone on St Brigid's Day
A 'monumental' 103-metre Brigid's Cloak is set to be displayed in Athlone on St Brigid's Day, facilitated by the Athlone Family Resource Centre (AFRC), and led by community artist Kara Richards
The project, titled "Reclaim the Flame", will be unveiled on Sunday, February 1, at 4pm at Athlone's new cycleway bridge.
"We will attempt the ambitious task of unrolling it across the 103-metre span, connecting the sides of the River Shannon in a powerful symbol of our community unity," Athlone FRC said.
"The only question remains: will we make it all the way across? Come and be part of this memorable moment of dedication and global collaboration."
The initiative united knitters and crafters, as patches for the colossal cloak arrived from around the world. Patches from the USA, UK, Africa, Brazil and beyond contributed to the final piece.
"We are honoured to include these pieces, which carry significant sentimental and cultural meaning, in this project. The cloak is an artistic and symbolic tribute to Brigid, representing community unity, creativity, and the power of our shared heritage.
"The finished creation is a vast, beautiful wave of textile art that is ready for its grand public reveal."
