Cregg named on GAA.ie 'Team of the Week'

Roscommon forward Daire Cregg has been named on the opening GAA.ie 'Team of the Week' of the Allianz National Football League season.

The forward contributed nine points during Roscommon's controversial one point loss to Kerry in Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney on Sunday afternoon.

It was a strong team showing from the visitors who twice reeled in scoring deficits to come within moments of claiming a precious victory in their opening Division 1 encounter against the reigning league champions.

A draw looked almost a certain outcome to the fixture, but Kerry teenage full forward Tomás Kennedy secured the win for the Kingdom when fisting over just as the hooter echoed around Fitzgerald Stadium.

Roscommon players and management were of the view that Kennedy's score came after the sound of the hooter but referee Brendan Cawley allowed the all important score to stand.

Roscommon team manager Mark Dowd will be impressed with his player's collective showing as they outscored Kerry by six points in the closing quarter of the contest.

Next up for Roscommon is a home fixture against Monaghan at King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park on Sunday, February 1, at 2pm.

Daire Cregg was named on the GAA.ie Team of the Week following his side's narrow defeat to Kerry. Overall, there are 12 counties represented on the team. Graphic: GAA.ie
