Jobs at risk in Athlone after liquidators appointed to EuroGiant chain

Fears are growing in Athlone over the possible loss of jobs after the High Court yesterday (Wednesday, February 4) appointed liquidators to the companies which operate the EuroGiant chain.

EuroGiant currently has two stores in the Athlone area; one at Athlone Town Centre and another at Daneswell Business Park in Monksland. The chain has further stores in nearby Ballinasloe and Roscommon town.

Founded in 1990 in Dublin, the discount retailer has 77 stores across the country, employing around 640 staff, which are now under threat.

EuroGeneral Limited and Bushgrove Limited, which trade as EuroGiant, have blamed rising costs for the decision. Its stores will remain open and continue trading as normal while a full review of the store network is carried out. A spokesperson for the Irish retailer told RTE News that company’s thoughts are with the staff affected.
