Footpaths around Athlone Castle and on Athlone's town bridge are to close for ten days to facilitate repaving works, according to Westmeath County Council.

Footpaths to close at Athlone Castle and town bridge due to paving works

Westmeath County Council has said paving works at Market Square, adjacent to Athlone Castle, will result in footpath closures in the area for ten days, starting from tomorrow (Wednesday).

The local authority said a contractor would be undertaking the paving works from Wednesday, February 11, to Friday, February 20.

"To facilitate these works it will be necessary to close the southern footpath on the Athlone Town Bridge (R446) and the footpaths adjacent to Athlone Castle," said the council.

The local authority apologised for any inconvenience and said alternative pedestrian routes would be signposted.

The Athlone Castle Visitor Centre closed to the public last autumn, to allow for redevelopment works. The council said its anticipated reopening will be in the autumn of this year, "although this date is subject to confirmation".
