Moate's Tuar Ard prepares to screen new film by Westmeath man

Tuar Ard Arts Centre in Moate is preparing to host a new film by Mullingar filmmaker Darragh O'Rourke tomorrow night (Friday, March 20, 8pm).

The film is entitled A Savage Silence, which is described by O'Rourke as an ultra-low budget, independent musical-drama based on the novel by Rory Hafford. It deals with relationship breakdown, betrayal, and ultimately finding a new way of being in the world. In addition, the film delves deep into themes of love, loss, and the transformative power of hope and resilience.

O’Rourke explained: “I decided to make this film because I felt it was an intriguing and inspiring story that offers guidance on navigating the hardships that many people, regardless of age or background, have faced at some point in their lives. I believe it will prove inspirational for everyone who views it.”

A Savage Silence stars a variety of young, midlands-based actors, some of whom have made their cinematic debut in the film. O’Rourke’s previous works have earned praise for originality and his unique approach to filmmaking and creative process.

“This is by far our most ambitious project to date,” said O’Rourke.

“I believe it will showcase the depth of hidden talent in the Irish creative scene, especially among a demographic that is often overlooked, misunderstood or ignored completely.”

The film features music from Rory Hafford's albums 'Savage Sounds' and 'Remember', integrating his original compositions to enhance the depth of the narrative. 'Remember' was also named Album of the Week in September 2023 on RTÉ Lyric FM’s Marty In The Morning.

Hafford is a psychotherapist, musician and author based in Mullingar, and is a frequent contributor on Midlands 103 radio, known for a segment on the Midlands Today show called Headaches and Heartaches.

The film was recorded at various locations in Offaly and Westmeath, with additional scenes shot in Malta and Brittany, France. The film premiered at the Mullingar Charity Variety Group Theatre in October, and has since received a positive audience response and been recognised by various organisations and film festivals around the world.

Tickets for A Savage Silence are €10 each, available online or at Tuar Ard box office. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director.
