Sullivan releases statement on shock departure as Athlone Town women's manager
Former Athlone Town women's senior team manager John Sullivan has addressed his departure from the club in a social media post.
Sullivan surprisingly left his role just one game into the league season, a 1-1 draw away to Sligo Rovers.
Taking to social media, Sullivan said he was "devastated" to "depart the group", but added that were "some things that my values just didn't align with".
He said he had a rewarding experience with a "great group of players and "coaching staff over the last few months".
Sullivan said he believed the "great leaders within the group will ensure that their professional attitudes remain for this coming weekend".
"From day one coming into the club people such as Gordon Brett, Anto Fay, Eamon (Cunningham) and co made my job very easy and of course, enjoyable.
"I hope the people of Athlone have many more successful moments this year celebrating the team's greatness."
Cunningham ended his statement with his hope that the group and staff get the "professional support to maximise their incredible talent".
Sullivan only took over the reins in the second half of last season after the resignation of Colin Fortune. He went on to guide the club to an historic cup and league double. And already this season, the club secured silverware, in the shape of the President's Cup.
