Prize-giving day at Marist College

Marist College celebrated the academic excellence, outstanding sporting and extra-curricular achievements of its students, as the prize giving ceremony took place at the school.

It presented the school with an opportunity to recognise the hard work, determination and resilience demonstrated by students across all disciplines.

Students were presented with academic awards, individual subject awards, sporting awards and extra-curricular awards.

Eli Dullea, Tadgh Kilkenny, Adam McKnight and Kieran Ryan, in first year, received academic awards for having the best average results across all of their subjects in exams throughout the year.

The English department recognised Barra Powell and Darragh Collins, in sixth year, who demonstrated exceptional talent in written expression.

Conor Fennell, in sixth year, was presented with the ‘Commitment to Geography Award’ in memory of teacher, Ms. Cryan. The winner of this award has shown exceptional commitment to all aspects of geography, investing considerable effort into his studies.

Andrew Henson was selected as the worthy recipient of the Victor Ludorum Award, for the second year in a row. This award is voted for by students across the school and is awarded to the ‘Best Senior Sports Person of 2026’. Andrew was selected for his achievements in rugby, swimming and GAA, including representing Ireland at the U18s Six Nations, along with all his other rugby successes for Marist College and his club, Buccaneers.

Each year, the Bank of Ireland sponsors ‘Student of the Year’ awards for 'Outstanding Contribution to Marist College'. This year, the Junior Bank of Ireland award went to Fearghal Kelly (third year). There was two very worthy senior students winning this award, with the Senior Bank of Ireland Award going to Jacob Bourke and Darragh Glynn Desmond (sixth year). Rachel Watts, from Bank of Ireland, was thanked for attending the ceremony and presenting awards.

Marist College has been renowned down through the years for excellence in mathematics, and this year was no different. Two very special awards were presented for excellence in mathematics. The first award was the Maureen Dooley Maths Award. Ms. Dooley was an inspiration to her students. She strove for excellence in mathematics with all of her students and has left a legacy of a love of her subject. In her memory this award acknowledges outstanding performance in maths. It is awarded to a third year student who has the best average in all Higher Level Maths tests. This year’s winner was Fearghal Kelly with an incredible 99 per cent average.

The Brother Philip Award acknowledges outstanding performance in Maths at Senior Cycle and this year’s recipient was Ruairi Dolan with an average of 96.92 per cent.

The school thank fifth year student, Fionn Scally, who looked after the photography on the day. The Good Conduct Medal was won by Darragh Glennon.

A huge congratulations to the rugby teams and coaches who were awarded ‘School of the Year’ at the Connacht Rugby Awards last weekend. The Marist rugby teams had great success in the League and Cup, winning both at U14 and senior level. This award recognises the hard work and determination shown by coaches and students throughout the year. This is the second year in a row that Marist College has been awarded this prestigious title.
