'Considerable' damage to Athlone supermarket during overnight break-in
Gardai in Athlone are investigating a break-in which saw "a considerable amount of damage" being caused to a local SuperValu store.
Sergeant Damien Connaughton said officers responded to an alarm call at the Croughan's SuperValu premises on the Ballymahon Road during the early hours of this morning (Thursday).
He said there had been a "forcible entry" into the supermarket, resulting in substantial damage to both the exterior and interior of the premises.
Sergeant Connaughton told the Westmeath Independent that it had not yet been established whether or not anything had been stolen during the incident.
The Gardai carried out a technical examination of the scene this morning, and are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the Ballymahon Road area between the hours of 1am and 3am this morning is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station on 09064 98550.
The SuperValu store was open for business, as normal, this morning.
