Richie's spot on for the Underdogs
On what was a very tough night, local players Richie Greene, Eamon Donoghue and Colm Flynn worked hard for the TG4 Underdogs in their heavy defeat to Dublin at Parnell Park last Friday.
Athlone's Greene, Donoghue of Padraig Pearses and Ballymahon's Flynn were part of the Underdogs squad for their glamour clash with the Dubs.
But the Underdogs proved no match for four in a row All-Ireland champions Dublin, who cruised to a 5-17 to 1-3 victory in front of a large crowd and the live TG4 cameras.
The sides were tied at 0-1 apiece early on, following a Niall Canning pointed free for the Underdogs, but once Robbie Gaughan put Dublin ahead a minute later, the side managed by Paul Clarke on the night would go on to take over, adding 2-4 unanswered, before going on to claim a 26-point win.
Despite the one-sided nature of the game, there were some strong performances from the Underdogs on the night, managed by All-Ireland winners Ray Silke, Valerie Mulcahy and Paul Galvin.
Athlone's Richie Greene managed to score the Underdogs' only goal of the evening. Greene’s sweetly taken penalty in the second half, after coming on as a substitute, was one of the highlights in a game where the Underdogs continued to show great spirit.
“My legs were shaking. I didn't even think I would make it to the penalty spot!” Greene said afterwards.

“That was all I ever wanted to do, to score a goal against Dublin back home when I'm sitting on the bench for my Senior team and playing Junior football.
“For every footballer that's playing Junior football for his club, there's lots of opportunities for you and you can always aim high for yourself.”
Facing Dublin was always going to be a very tough assignment for the Underdogs.
“It was what I expected and more to be honest,” Greene said.
“They are an unbelievable side, no matter what Dublin team comes out, and they were just up for it tonight.
“Look, we were up for it too. We did everything right throughout the six months we have been here. We've given it everything and those lads deserve huge credit," said Richie. "Those lads have shown commitment right throughout the whole series and they should all get a call-up to their county team," he added.
