Funeral of Athlone employee in tragic accident to take place tomorrow
The funeral will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) of a local worker who lost his life in a tragic accident at the weekend.
On Friday evening last, Ryan ‘Red’ Briody from Castlepollard died from injuries sustained when he became trapped under a car he was working on at a property in the Coralstown area.
Ryan was a technician in Michael Moore Car Sales in Athlone and in a post on its social media tonight the company said it was with great sadness that it announced the loss of a valued member of staff. Michael Moore Car Sales said he was finishing his last year of apprenticeship and had showed great potential in progressing into a senior role within the team.
“Ryan’s colleagues held him in the highest regard and he will be deeply missed by all.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, May he rest in peace.”
The Service Department will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) from 10.30am to 2.30pm.
The 23-year-old was taken to Tullamore hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Gardaí are investigating the incident but are treating it as a tragic accident.
A popular member of his community with a wide circle of friends, Ryan was part of the senior hurling team from Castlepollard Community College which won a North Leinster PPS C title in 2015. He was also a member of Castlepollard Hurling Club.
In a post on social media, the club offered its “sincerest condolences” to Ryan’s family and described him as a “brilliant character who gave great service to both Castlepollard and Ringtown hurling clubs”.
Castlepollard Camogie Club also paid tribute to Ryan, saying that he was “a great character who will be sadly missed”. In recent years Ryan participated in white collar boxing style fundraising events run by Elite Boxing Club in Mullingar.
In a post on social media, the club’s head coach Tony Conroy said that Ryan “lit up the club every time he was in training and had everyone laughing and joking”.
“You will be sadly missed by us all, Red. The club are thinking of your family at this sad time,” he said.
Ryan’s passing is deeply regretted by his loving mother Breda, sister Shaunna, his father Sean, John, aunts, uncles, cousins and all his friends.
His funeral, which in compliance with government guidelines, is restricted to immediate family, will take place at the Church of St John the Baptist, Whitehall, on Wednesday at noon.
