Many tributes following sudden death of Canon Trevor Sullivan
Many tributes have been paid this week to the former Rector of the Aughrim & Creagh Parish Unions, Canon Trevor Sullivan, following his sudden death on Saturday last, October 31, at his home in Ballinasloe.
The much-loved Church leader served as Rector in the East Galway parishes for 23 years up to his retirement in 2007. He was also well-known in Athlone through his engagement in chaplaincy work with the student body at the Institute of Technology.
The late Canon Sullivan also came into contact with many families right across the Midlands as Chaplain at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, where he ministered with deep devotion for many years.
In paying tribute to the late Canon this week, the present Rector of the Aughrim & Creagh Union of Parishes, Rev. John Godfrey, described him as having a “passionate commitment to peace and reconciliation” who had done much to bring together people from the north and south through his work with the Battle of Aughrim Interpretative Centre and with the Aughrim Summer School.
Canon Sullivan had a very active retirement, during which he continued to minister in a number of parishes, including Athlone Parish, and in the Ardagh Union and Roscommon Parish.
“There has been a deep outpouring of affection for Canon Sullivan from former parishioners, clergy colleagues and people in the wider community, who remember his life and ministry with such fondness” said Revd. John Godfrey, who said the thoughts and prayers of the entire community are with his wife, Doris, their daughters Moynagh and Johanne and all the family.
Canon Trevor Arnold Sullivan’s funeral was private, in line with Covid-19 regulations, but his Death Notice states that a special Memorial Celebration of his life will be confirmed at a later date.
