Athlone Town's double dream remains alive

Athlone Town women's team is still in contention for what would be a remarkable league and cup double.

Last Saturday evening, Athlone defeated Galway 1-0 in their penultimate game in the SSE Airtricity Women's National League, thanks to a goal from midfielder Muireann Devaney.

Athlone's win over Galway, combined with Wexford Youths dropping two points in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Peamount United, means that Tommy Hewitt's charges could force a play-off for the league title.

If Athlone win their last league game against Bohemians at Dalymount Park on Saturday (kick-off 5.20pm) and if Wexford and Shelbourne draw in their last fixture, the midlanders and Shels will finish joint top on points. And if that scenario comes to pass, Athlone and Shelbourne will face a play-off for the WNL crown.

Interestingly, Athlone and Shelbourne are already guaranteed to do battle with silverware at stake when they meet in the FAI Women's Cup final at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday, November 6.

Peamount needed to win last Saturday's game against Wexford to remain in the title hunt, but a late goal from Aine Walsh ended their hopes.

That result ensures Wexford and defending champions Shelbourne will meet in a potential title decider on Saturday (5.20pm, live on TG4) as, if either side wins at Ferrycarrig Park, they will be crowned champions.

However, a draw could open the door for Athlone, provided they take care of their own business against Bohemians.
