Ireland's lowest temperature overnight recorded in Roscommon

The arrival of March started the meteorological season of Spring - but you wouldn't know it from some of the temperatures recorded in the Midlands last night (Monday).

Met Éireann said the coldest temperature at any of its weather stations overnight was in Mount Dillon, Roscommon, where minus 3.7 degrees was recorded.

In Westmeath, the Met Éireann station in Mullingar had the seventh coldest overnight temperature, of minus 2.3 degrees.

The ten coldest temperatures recorded by Met Éireann overnight.

Not all areas of the country were below freezing last night, however, with the temperature at Valentia Observatory in Kerry dropping no lower than 2.9 degrees.

Tonight will be another very cold and frosty one, the forecasting service said, with temperatures likely to be even lower than last night.

The lowest temperatures will be between zero and minus four for most of the country, "falling as low as -5 or -6 degrees in Ulster and the northwest".
