Gardaí monitoring local bog fire

Gardaí in Athlone have been monitoring a fire over a large area of Glynwood bog since late last night.

The guards were alerted by the fire services just before midnight on Friday.

There was no immediate threat to property or homes, so it was decided Gardaí would monitor the situation overnight.

A Garda spokesperson said the fire has died down since and is smouldering at present. The remnants of the fire can be seen over a large area of the bog, close to Baylin.

Fire services are expected in the area later this morning.
